Photos of a fly leg embedded in glycerin at 100x magnification
1) Regular light photography with B&W conversion. Tiny hairs on the leg appear pitch dark.
2) IR photo of the same part - much better fine structure of the leg skin, hairs are semi-transparent and reveal the inside.

Explanation: IR light has a longer wavelength and is therefore less reflected on chitin surfaces of insects than regular light.
